WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WEBSITE DESIGN AND TOOLS TO USE AS A BEGINNER

Some people or business owners have been hearing about website, but they do not really know much about it or what it is used for. But in this post today, I will be talking about everything that you need to know about websites and tools that you can use to build a website. I will first of all start by explaining websites, so that even as an online beginner or business owner, you will be able to understand what a website is all about.

SIMPLE WEBSITE EXPLANATION

Many of my students that I have been teaching website design, I always explain websites to them as pages that are collected and stored online, and these pages are accessible on the Internet. And examples of websites are Facebook.com, Google.com, Quora.com and many more examples of websites. If you notice on almost every website you will find some pages like Home, About or Contact page, those pages are called web pages. Website design simply means the act of creating a website, which is mostly done by website designers. And website designers are known as someone who builds or design websites.

TYPES OF WEBSITE

There are many types of websites that if i start mentioning all of them in this post, we might not be able to finish it today, but i will mention some of the types of websites to you. These are some of the types of websites;

1. Portfolio Website

This is a type of website that is built for the purpose of advertising yourself and also showing some work or project that you have done. For example you are a Graphics Designer who needed a portfolio website, and you went ahead and hire a website designer to design a portfolio website for you, then the portfolio website will contain your picture, your name, the work that you do (Graphics Designer), your skills or tools that you use for your Graphics design, Graphics design projects or works that you have done, information about you and also your contact details. As you can see now that the portfolio website is promoting you as a Graphics designer to people who come to your website.

2. E-commerce Website

This is a type of website that is built for the purpose of selling products, which now acts as an online store. Examples of e-commerce websites are website like Jumia.com.ng, temu.com. Let me say that you want to buy a mobile phone online, you can go to jumia website and search for the name of the phone that you want to buy and order for the phone to be delivered to you by adding your location or address. E-commerce website is a website that is designed for selling online.

3. Landing Page website

This is a simple one page website that contains a heading, image, video and a call to action button that users can use to perform an action like the Sign up button, Buy now button, Send message button.

4. Banking website

This is a type of website that is built for the purpose of performing transactions online. And some of the examples of banking websites are websites like Opay banking website.

5. Crypto or Trading Website

This is a type of website that is built for users to be able to perform trading activities, and examples of these websites are Bybit, Binance, Trust Wallet and others.

There are many more types of websites like business websites, organization websites and many more.

TOOLS USE FOR WEBSITE DESIGN

There are many website design tools that you can use to design websites. Website design tools are what we can use to design or build websites. Some of these tools are WordPress, Wix, Figma, Code editors like Vs code, notepad++, sublime text. But tools like WordPress and Wix does not require you to understand or learn coding languages, it is known as a No-code platform while using code editors tools like Vs code or Notepad++ requires you to understand coding or programming languages like HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT, PHP, PYTHON before you can be able to properly use it to build website. Although some people use Ai tools like Lovable Ai or Claude Ai  to design websites, designing a website with Ai will require you to understand how to use a good prompt (Prompt Engineering), so as to get a nice result. People who design websites with Ai are called Vibe coders. But I personally do not see Ai as a tool to designers or developers, but a helper that makes website designers build websites faster. Using those website design tools depends on what you want, like if you don't want to learn how to code, then you can use the No-code platform like WordPress and if you are the type that want to learn and build website with coding languages, then you can use code editor like Vs code.

REQUIREMENT TO BECOME A WEBSITE DESIGNER

Many people venture into website design, without checking if they have the requirements of becoming a website designer. Although there are not many requirements to become a website designer, I will be mentioning what you can take note of, before starting as a website designer. These are some of the things that you should take note of;

1. Your Passion or Hobby

Some people go into website designing with different motives and reasons, for example some people saw their friend working for business as a designer, and they decided to start also as a website designer, without checking if they can really do the work. But if you go into website design out of your passion or hobby as someone who loves creativity, working with colours or designing, then you will be able to do better as a website designer than someone who started website design, because of the money that is paid to website designers.

2. Access to Device (Phone or Laptop)

Another thing that you need to check before starting website design is to make sure that you have access to a device like a phone or laptop. Laptop is really needed for you as website designer, but if you don't have a laptop, then you can at least have a mobile phone which you can use to try to make some design, but you will have some challenges like your phone slowing down when designing or not staying consistent when using a mobile phone to design.

3. Access to Internet and Resources

When starting as a website designer, you will need an internet connection for the purpose of either researching or making changes to your website online. And again you can not just start website design without getting access to the right knowledge, before you can be able to start and design a website, you will need to have access to the right knowledge through resources like online courses, YouTube tutorials, PDF notes. And you must need an internet connection to get access and learn from those resources.

These are some of the requirements that you will need to take note and check out when starting as a website designer, so that you can have a good journey in starting website design.
